A charming Bed and Breakfast in Snow Shoe, Pennsylvania
…an area carved from one of the first six land grants surveyed in 1773 under the authority of the Pennsylvania State Assembly, shortly after it compensated the William Penn heirs with 130,000 pounds for much of the vast territory they claimed. The surveys commenced a short distance from here, at a spring and resting place used by the Chinklacamoose Indians who traveled between their villages in Lock Haven (to the southeast) and Clearfield (to the northeast). When Thomas Smith, who led a team of six surveyors, reported his findings to the land office in Philadelphia, he referred to it as the “Snowshoe Surveys” because a member of his party discovered an Indian snowshoe at a stopover site.
The village of Snow Shoe, which became a borough in 1900, was established in 1858 by the Bellefonte & Snow Shoe Railroad Company. This short-line railroad played a crucial role in opening the mountainous terrain for timber and coal transport, thanks to a resourceful young engineer who innovatively designed “switchbacks”. Nowadays, the railroads have nearly vanished, the woodsman’s axe is almost silent, and the earth has released the last of its coal.
However, the Snow Shoe area is perhaps best recognized as a sanctuary for travelers. Hospitality comes naturally here; for decades, the highway that runs parallel to I-80, once known as “The Snow Shoe Pike” and now designated as PA Rte. 144, was lined with tavern-wayside inns catering to adventurous pioneer travelers heading north and west. At one time, Snow Shoe was home to two of the best-known hotels in Pennsylvania, frequented by eastern city dwellers—the Mountain House and the Washington House.
*Legends?** Absolutely, we have our share. Less than five miles from here, there is a tale of a fortune in buried gold! It is said that a company of U.S. soldiers transporting a shipment of government gold over the Snow Shoe Pike shortly after the Revolutionary War stopped for the night at a wayside inn. Fearing an ambush the next day by a notorious gang of highwaymen in the area, the soldiers buried the gold near the inn that night. Sure enough, the following day, they were ambushed and perished to the last man! No survivors…no one to recover the hidden gold.
Here at the Cramer Family Mountain Inn, we won’t ask you to believe the legends, but we will encourage you to trust that we’re a small family-operated business dedicated to continuing and perhaps enhancing the cherished Snow Shoe hospitality, with genuine concern for your needs. We hope you will share your experiences with others, and like the pioneers of old, make Snow Shoe your stopover destination!
